"Lumie's quest": An Inspiring Children's Series Celebrating Black Excellence and Afro-Canadian Heritage Available September 1st on TFO.org

Toronto, August 7, 2024 - TFO and Apartment 11 are pleased to announce the arrival of the French adaptation of Sunny’s Quest, "La quête de Lumie" on TFO.org on September 1st. The new original TFO series for children aged 6 to 9 features Black children primarily living in Ontario. Each episode of this inspiring series presents a child sharing their ethnic and cultural background while showcasing their daily hobbies, talents, and rich Canadian heritage.

"La quête de Lumie" offers viewers a window into the lives of Afro-Canadian children, illustrating how, while similar to those of other Canadian children, their lives are magnified by their cultural heritage, traditions, and knowledge. With inspiring messages from Afro-Canadian celebrities working in their dream professions, each episode encourages these young viewers to pursue their path to excellence.

Exploring Plurality and Intersectionality
This first season focuses on the plurality and intersectionality within the Afro-Canadian diaspora. Viewers will have numerous opportunities to interpret and analyze stories of Canadians, highlighting their similarities and differences. Each episode is a true celebration of diversity, equity, openness, culture, and respect.

Inspiring Messages from Afro-Canadian Stars
Afro-Canadian celebrities share inspiring messages, illustrating the journeys of those who have followed their passions and achieved their dreams. These messages serve as sources of inspiration for young viewers, encouraging them to embrace their identities and strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives.

A Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
"La quête de Lumie" reflects a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. By highlighting the unique stories of Afro-Canadian children, the series aims to raise awareness and celebrate the contributions of the Afro-Canadian community to Canadian society as a whole. This commitment has been recognized with nominations for the Canadian Screen Awards (2024 Nomination – Best Children's or Youth Non-Fiction Program or Series) and the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence (2023 Nomination - Best Live Action, Non-Scripted Program for Ages 6-9). The show is particularly relevant, as last winter, the province of Ontario introduced mandatory learning about Black history.

"I hope that "La quête de Lumie" will entertain and educate children first and foremost, but also the rest of the family. This series is the first of its kind to highlight the customs, traditions, and cities where Afro-descendant Franco-Ontarians reside. Additionally, I hope 'La quête de Lumie' will change perceptions by showing that we, as Black people, are much more alike than different. By telling their stories, I want to inspire other children and families to celebrate their own culture while being proud to be Franco-Ontarian and to appreciate the diversity of our society. The richness and diversity of the experiences of Black Franco-Ontarian children are invaluable, as this new generation is already shaping the present and future of Ontario." Sabine Daniel, producer of La quête de Lumie.
